The Center for Educational Research and Development has issued the TIMSS Advanced test summary in which Lebanese students took part in 2015, this international study provides statistics on the achievement of 12th graders in mathematics and physics around the world.
The Lebanese and Russian students (of the General Science section, 12th grade) have fulfilled the best performance back then in mathematics and were the only ones among the participating countries whose score was higher than the average scale.
Lebanon achieved a high assessment average of 532 marks, 32 points higher than the world average, and ranked second in the world among 16 participating countries, while Russia participated in two groups; the first group for those who followed an intensive educational program (six hours per week) received 540 marks, whereas the other group who followed the regular educational program received 485-mark.
The United States received 485 marks.
These results would reflect the effective teaching of mathematics in the secondary grades in the Lebanese curriculum and that in parallel to following the teaching global trends.
However, it is important to note that the sample was selected from the third-grade-secondary, general science branch, exclusively, because of the suitability of the mathematics curriculum in this section with the requirements of the test. These tests have included KNOWING, APPLYING and REASONNING, as well as reference data to help analyze the results and relate them to certain indicators for students, teachers and students.
